How UK printers price gang sheets: per metre, tiered and fixed sheets

A printer's pricing rule is read from its own page and stored as one of three kinds:

• Per metre: a fixed rate for each length of film used, for example a price per metre. Longer jobs cost proportionally more.
• Tiered per metre: the rate per metre drops in steps as the order gets longer. The whole order is billed at the rate for the step it reaches, not just the extra length past that step.
• Fixed sheets: the printer sells a set list of sheet lengths, each with its own price, rather than a rate per metre. Your packed length is rounded up to whichever sheet size holds it.

A per metre or tiered per metre printer can set a minimum order length. A job packed shorter than that minimum is still billed for the minimum length, so a small order can cost the same as a longer one at that printer.

A fixed-sheet printer has no separate minimum in the same sense: the smallest amount you can buy is its smallest sheet, and whole sheets are always charged, with any unused space on the sheet not refunded.

Each printer's own page states its prices one of three ways, and the total shown on this site follows whichever way that printer uses:

• Prices include VAT: the listed price is the price paid, and this site shows the VAT portion of it.
• Prices exclude VAT: VAT at 20% is added to the subtotal and delivery to reach the total.
• No VAT is charged: a few printers' own pages state that no VAT is added at checkout, so the listed price is the price paid, with no VAT amount shown.

Some printers state a flat delivery charge, or free delivery above a threshold, on the same page as their prices. Where a printer's own page does not state a delivery charge, the total on this site excludes delivery rather than guessing at it, and says so next to the total.

10 copies of a 100 × 150 mm design, 5 mm spacing and a 10 mm edge margin, packed onto 560 mm film. The packed layout is 325 mm long, with 17.58% film waste.

Beyond Colour charges per metre, with a one-unit minimum order. Even though the job only needs 325 mm, it is billed for a whole 1,000 mm unit: £7.00, plus VAT at 20% (£1.40, since this printer's prices exclude VAT), for a total of £8.40.

Aspinline sells fixed sheets. The job does not fit the shortest sheet, so the plan buys the next size up (560 × 500 mm), at £8.00. This printer's prices include VAT, so nothing is added on top.

For this job, the fixed-sheet total is £0.40 lower than the per metre total, because the per metre printer's minimum order rounds a short job up to a whole metre. A longer job, past that minimum, can cost less per metre than a fixed sheet sized for it: pack your own designs to compare the total either way.
